I know there are women commenting on this blog, but I don’t think there are any writing posts. Let’s talk about why neocracy looks like patriarchy.

This is especially weird, considering that religious communities are disproportiately populated by females.

We had a woman neocrat a while back, Andra, but after one or two entries she simply faded away…

  2. Sarmad says:

In my humble opinion, it doesn’t look like patriarchy, in fact. Are you discriminated against me because of my groin?

  3. Sarmad says:

The Neocrats isn’t a religious community anyway!

  4. Odysseus says:

All I’m saying is that it’s weird. I think women have a different perspectives than men. And not just because their genitals are different.

I know it’s not a religious community, but I’m under the impression that most of the writers have a personal religious persuasion. It’s 60% of all religious people are women, then our sample is a bit skewed — that’s all.

As a commenter, i see this blog as the ultimate virtual ‘pumice stone’…it can hurt, it will be abrasive, but it is always good for my sole, to slough away old skin.

It’s always good to have a Neocrat in your makeup kit, as part of your beauty regime.

  6. Saleem says:

Sole/soul, good wordplay or sheer accident?

  7. Sanisha says:

what do you think, Saleem ?

  8. Saleem says:

I’m going to give you the benefit of the doubt, because as Neocrats, we like to be surprisingly nice from time to time.

  9. Pfg says:

I hope I don’t ruffle any feathers by making this comment, but it is just possible that the points brought up by Odysseus are actually not so surprising.

Historically speaking (and contemporarily too) it has been the case that males tend to disproportionately occupy prominent, public, or important positions in religions. That is of course true of most organizations, but it seems to still linger in organized religion more so than in public office and the private sector. Neocrats is not official, of course, but it’s still public. On the other hand, from my weak anthropological background, I seem to recall that across cultures women (on average) tend to place greater value on religion than men (go to church, pray more frequently) despite having less influence over doctrine etc.

However, it might just be that men blog more than women.

  10. Sarmad says:

All of these comments may be true, but NOT about Neocrats, whose apparent maleness is entirely due to chance. I repeat, I have no gender. Gender is mostly a state of mind.

  11. mogogo says:

    1. This is not, it is not, repeat not a religious community. its a blog by a bunch of people who happen to be bahais.

    2. its a blog put together by a bunch of friends, who happen all to be blokes. most of my friends are guys. so it goes.

    3. this is not a religious blog.

    4. this is not a bahai blog.

    5. this is not a religious community.

    6. capice?

  12. Karma Cop says:

Wasn’t the post about women and not religion? Having a few female voices on board might make for a more varied blog. But that’s just my opinion…

  13. Saleem says:

Yeah, I thought it was about women, too. The remark about religious communities doesn’t seem to have necessitated a six-point agenda in reply…

  14. mogogo says:

sorry, quite right, it didnt, i just get annoyed if the impression is given that we are a religious community. we’re a bunch of blokes, alas. but we have female plans afoot…

  15. Sanisha says:

i think this thread is going to create some very false impressions, so it would be good to clarify some,I would like to add:

dear Odysseus, it makes me uncomfortable that you use the owrd pervert in relation to Sarmad, i know you are joking but that canot be further from the truth! as a reader over the past year I think that Sarmad has the highest respect for nature, animals and birds, how much more so for females and women! He has a very masculine energy…(and this is not the opinion of groupie, another girl who sometimes reads also who thinks this).I think he is also very in tune with his senses and sensitive to his surroundings (and therefore feminine?).He has only relatively recently ‘opened up’ more and so i hope this particular thread does not cause his to go back into the Brenthaven case from where he came or become guarded, like a hedgehog.

I am sure you know Saleem, and from what i have seen, he seems like a very sincere guy, genuine and down to earth, and generous, of himself. I don’t think he knew what this blog would be become but I think he has really tried to cater for everyone’s tastes.I dont think he ever intended it to become a debate about ‘how Bahai is your blog?’.I think he’d agree that all the writers are just people, just being, all sharing ideas.

What this thread does is opens up for discussion the idea of GENDER and the characteristics of being RELIGIOUS.I am very sceptical of statistics or census studies which try to paint picture about either of these two topics, but it is very interesting…lets discuss that.

Lastly, Mogogo, if the Neocrats won an award for the “best Bahai blog” someday, would you reject it? no i did not think so.The fact that you so strongly reject that label tells me that you may have a very good idea of what a bahai blog is or should be, and if so what would that be ? i think if you brek it down, you would find that no one, no blog is ever truly representitive of the Bahai’s.

  16. Odysseus says:

Sanisha, I’m sure you are entirely correct about Sarmad. He seems like the new ageiest man a man can be. I’ve just been trying to get into this whole Neocrats thing, and have been hiring out one of the current writers for tutorials. If by being a bit cheeky I inadvertently slandered Sarmad, I apologize.

As you point out, gender is a very interesting topic. And although the perspectives of the ‘crats aren’t invalidated for not having women writers, female voices could only make it better! Anyway… Mogogo did make a loud, clear, and good point about the blog not being a religious community. Just as long as we’re a bunch of blokes who aren’t uncomfortable with showing our colours.

  17. Mogogo says:

Accusations of perversion are wholly appropriate.
