I have broken the back of this fast. After today there will be only 4 more days. And then a new year and a new spring. I had a constitutional an hour ago. A constitutional, Saleem tells me, is an old term for a walk taken for the benefit of one’s health. The spring was all around. I remembered last year’s spring, which was absurdly late, and compare it to this one, which is a little early. I then think of James Lovelock’s predictions, which include the idea that most of Europe will become a desert. This last word does not remind me of peach and pear pie with fresh cream.

  1. Saleem says:

    I wonder if it’s more properly, “I took a constitutional …”?

  2. Sarmad says:

    Yes you are right:

1836 [E. CASWALL] Pluck Exam. Papers (Oxf.; ed. 3) 41 He taketh a constitutional of forty minutes every day.

  3. Lincoln says:

I find the idea of the Fast with a back to break odd, even as a metaphor, but I understand the sense of exultancy that comes with the end of the Fast, having made it through the difficult days. I, alas, have only autumn to look forward to with the new year.
