I like experimenting during the fast. I’ve been going with a light breakfast these past 2 years (as I usually forget to eat during the day anyway), but this year am discovering that my one bagle this morning didn’t stop me from craving chocolate-covered almonds all day…

What does your breakfast look like, and do you have any wise tips&tricks to share with our 10 readers?

Nothing. I usually can’t be bothered getting up at 6. So I go from the night before until 6 the next day. It is actually quite easy.

  2. Saleem says:

“Asleep on the couch of heedlessness” - the point of the dawn start is not breakfast!

At least he’s not turning day into night like some Muslims do…

  4. Sanisha says:

hahahhahaha, but you guys in the Northern hemisphere have it easy !Our days are longer and warmer therefore we are hungrier and thirstier than you are

(and i have to admit that if i was living in Saudi it would be very tempting to turn day into night, at least on the weekends :)

  5. Sarmad says:

Saleem, do you stay awake from 6 am?

  6. Saleem says:

It depends on the day. Yesterday yes, today no, tomorrow perhaps only a brief return to sleep, and again during weekdays I’ll stay awake.

I abhor the notion of treating the Bahá’í Fast as though it were Ramadan. The standard Muslim custom, now, is to stay up all night and eat a great deal, and sleep much of the day.

Sometimes one cannot get to bed at the earlier hour that staying awake from before sunrise might require, and so a brief return to the couch of heedlessness is needed, but in general I like to try and stay awake.

Having fasted in both vertical hemispheres(and both horizontal ones, now that I think about it), I have to agree with Sanisha: the Northern Hemisphere guys have it easy!

As for my breakfast, I eat the same thing as normal, but usually just a bit more. A bowl of granola, a glass of orange juice, and a piece or two of fruit. On weekends, I go back to sleep; on weekdays, up and off to work. On all occasions, I say extra prayers.

  8. Marshn says:

I have extra prayers and usually muesli with yoghurt and a lot of liquids. I go back to bed quite often but more so on the weekend.

  9. Barney says:

You can read about my fast breakfast here.

what a wonderful post… it captures the atmosphere so well! that’s another thing i love about the fast: the feeling that so many people are doing the same thing becomes so much more real. the mundane act of this early breakfast, the long shared hours of the fasting day remind me of our collective efforts to change the world…
