We have three new planets!

Or, to be precise, we now have only eight classical planets - Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune - while Pluto has been redefined as a ‘pluton’, a kind of junior planet for which Pluto is the archetype. Two new bodies have been given the status of plutons: Pluto’s old moon, UB313, and the former asteroid Ceres, which is between Jupiter and Mars, and is the largest body in our solar system’s asteroid belt.

I hereby dub UB313 the Neorock, and move that the Neocrats decamp to Neorock forthwith, to start afresh the human race.

anyone else picture James Bond’s Moonraker ? !?
(if you don’t remember, it was later parodied in Austin Powers )
…a space race…cool ! send us a postcard! you guys, where is Marshn these days ?

  2. Sarmad says:

I must admit I was always very happy with the number 9 representing a significance in our cosmology. I think, however, it is good to downgrade Pluto. These new plutons are fairly rubbish.

  3. Saleem says:

I used to think about that as a child: nine planets, the number 9. But now, I think it’s good that our solar system’s planet count no longer corresponds to that particular item of Arabic numerology, because it was surely too pat before, too prone to being misread.

  4. Sanisha says:

interesting…those plutons were recently discovered and newly named, but in no way are they new! they were probably there before we were even a twinkle in the sky!
This may have been how some people in the past felt about the ‘discovery’ of North America and parts of Africa, maybe.

  5. Saleem says:

    Marshn says she’ll be back.

  6. Marshn says:

Marshn is back. She was visiting the Neorock. She needed rest. New human race ey? That would mean you guys need to procreate…

  7. Saleem says:

No no. A neocratic human race would obviously - and before anything else - outsource all procreation to the test tubes.

  8. Sanisha says:

ok Saleem, now I know that you watched Austin Powers and not 007 because there were no test tubes in Moonraker…!
if there were then the result would be somthing like ‘Mini Me’ … which is funny, but not fun !…you agree Marshn?

  9. Saleem says:

I was referring to Huxley’s ‘Brave New World’.

  10. Marshn says:

I agree Sanisha! It is somewhat disconcerting that you man are now days so afraid of women, u would even have procreation done in test tubes.

  11. Saleem says:

This conversation seems to be slipping into a dark direction. Focus. Planets, people. New planets!

  12. Marshn says:

Dark direction? I don’t see anything dark, do you Sanisha?

  13. Sanisha says:

Marshn, I write to you in exile, on Neorock, the sun shines here too and I have not seen any block holes for a few light years…the weather is balmy, but i shall soon return…

with regard to direction…see Saleem’s comment about the book “Brave New World” … that vision of the future of the human race is quite dark, procreation did not involve love nor celibacy, in fact there was mass promiscuity and debauchery ! In this equation, women did not need men either. Is this what Saleem implied about the world to come on Neorock, i don’t know, you decide.i am mere earthling.

  14. Saleem says:

No, the dark direction was the crazy women making weird comments about men, fear, and procreation. And this shouldn’t be confused with a genuine sentiment on my part, just a kind of, “what the hell are you talking about?” sentiment.

  15. Sanisha says:

woah man! Iwas just referring to some movies and then exploring some of the ideas in the said book…

we both understood what you meant, i don’t think crazy is a very nice word, neither is weird…flamboyant is more apt I think.

  16. Marshn says:

I think it would be nice if the guys werent so patronizing to us. You either take us too literally and seriously or not seriously at all.
Can I come join you on Neorock Sanisha? We could chat in peace.

  17. Saleem says:

Hey, this is in the best tradition of boys’ common rooms: the visiting girls are always being either provoked or ignored. There is no middle ground. (And we have not grown up yet.) Besides, what did we discuss in the other thread? Be cool! ;)

  18. Marshn says:

    Long live tradition!

  19. Kavitha says:

Can I come to Neorock too?
