Proofs of Stupidity, episode 1: Original Sin.

During one of our many ‘phone conversations, I remarked to Sina that ‘ethicist’ is a job. There are people who are ethicists, who gauge ethical implications and suggest ways to live ethically. He said something crass, vulgar, blinkered and stupid, to the effect that ethicists are not people who make money, which is a measure of their worth.

Probably they don’t make much money; I suppose it depends on how well their books sell. But to presume that the societal worth of a particular job depends on the attendant salary is - check above - crass, vulgar, blinkered and stupid. After all, as a consultant who lays off Home Office workers whilst increasing its running costs, Sina has a decent salary. Trash collectors perform a crucial task for collective hygiene, and make less; perhaps if they took out rubbish people instead of rubbish bins, they would get a big fat raise.

  1. Original Sin says:

Actually, I don’t make that much, starting salaries in Big 4 are comparatively quite low.

Also, the Home Office “workers” you hail as if I slit their throats, were more like bloated middle management types who are leeches on the public purse and serve little other purpose than constantly falling ill or going on maternity leave.

Finally, nobody is actually hired as an ethicist, they become one, if their moral character is of such disposition and are often awarded the “title” posthumously.

From this list of people labelled as ethicists, if you were to review each and every one of their bios, how many do you think list ethicist under occupation?

The only thing “crass, vulgar, blinkered and stupid” is your complete lack of any research before writing something here. This post, along with the Shirley Temple drivel are two recent examples of your ineptitude which inevitably backfires.

    /wipes dust off sholder

  2. Sanisha says:

interesting, recently i was told about the difference between morals and ethics.I had not thought about the difference till then and so here are some loose defintions for my/your info:

    Eth•ics

The completeness and consistency of its morality is the peculiar praise of the ethics which the Bible has taught.
    (from answers.com)

    and

a.A set of principles of right conduct.
b.A theory or a system of moral values: “An ethic of service is at war with a craving for gain” (Gregg Easterbrook).
2.The study of the general nature of morals and of the specific moral choices to be made by a person; moral philosophy.
    3. The rules or standards governing the conduct of a person or the members of a profession: medical ethics.

    whereas :the definition of MORALS

1.The lesson or principle contained in or taught by a fable, a story, or an event.
2.A concisely expressed precept or general truth; a maxim.
3.Rules or habits of conduct, especially of sexual conduct, with reference to standards of right and wrong: a person of loose morals; a decline in the public morals.

// so, a Sina, with a job, could be regraded as ethical, meaning : he prescibes and uppholds to a set of principles that are agreed upon such: lazy people are not productive and should be fired. This may or may not fit into what we view as moral, yet he is doing his job and which is generally accepted as somthing he has to do and get paid for, and so his conscience ( i assume he has one) is pperhaps both his best friend and hos biggest enemy , to make decisions.

its seems to me , that someone who has the power and ability to make ethical choices that conflicts with their sense morality, on a daily basis, for the general good of all people should be paid more!! The street sweeper, although very necessary, does not make those taxing decisions about whether its both good and right to pick up the litter, and whether he should or should not abide by the generally accepted codes of cleanliness ethics we have.maybe?so ,

if practising ethics morally can make you rich then thats great and , well stupidity …well, no comment there.

  3. Mogogo says:

Maternity leave? Sina, you appall me.

  4. Original Sin says:

/Calls ‘em as he sees ‘em

  5. Saleem says:

It’s Thatcher in brownboy format! Get her!

  6. Dorian Gray says:

Seriously, Original Sin, I’d like to hear what you really meant about getting rid of people who take maternity leave.

  7. Saleem says:

It means that Original Sin works for a corporation and believe that all sense in our society emanates from them. Indeed, the other day he questioned the very notion of society, when even David Cameron has reinstated its existence. A corporation left to govern itself according purely to the exigencies of the market would believe that women employees who had become pregnant had become a source of inefficiency and a liability on the balance sheet, thus it would routinely dismiss them. It’s a horrendous attitude, thankfully there is such a thing as society, more or less maintained by the state, and excessive liberalism such as Original Sin’s gets no further than being a crudely formulated, repulsive opinion.

But of course, Dorian, you knew all that. It’s doubtful whether we’d get OS to say all this quite as explicitly, so I thought I’d help him along. Feel free to lay into him!

  8. Original Sin says:

Please keep in mind that even if my opition was in line with what Sal is saying (it isn’t), I wouldn’t use so many words to say it.

Also, Sal has had a secret crush on Dave Cameron ever since he brushed into him when he was interning at the G, so any comment that includes DC has a twisted bias my friends.

  9. Original Sin says:

And Dorian, what I mean is that when the avarange lifespan of an employee is 3-5 years nowadays, and she uses 1 of those years to sit on her fat ass and play with a kid, and still get paid 100% salary for it, surely this is tantamount to gross negligance on behalf of the managers?!

    } //troll end

  10. Saleem says:

    That’s pretty much what I said you’d say…

  11. Sanisha says:

i am puking too . vomiting . i hope a fat ass sits on you!

and i change my above opinion: particular PEOPLE should not be encouraged to have children. The kid will be given a laptop at age 1.8 and be told to go play with himself,

    “..go google somthing l’il Sin…”

, ‘oh you want to know what I do at work ? go ask answers.com …’

“no your mom is not home, she is at work , making lots and lots of money…ha ha ha ”

Sin, i know you are joking, right ?

  12. Saleem says:

We shouldn’t be too unfair. Ostensibly, OS is working for a firm trying to make a government department spend more efficiently. But in hanging pregnant single mothers out to dry, he’s possibly identified the wrong line on the balance sheet.

  13. Original Sin says:

    troll

    1. v.,n. To utter a posting designed to attract predictable responses or flames; or, the post itself. Derives from the phrase “trolling for newbies” which in turn comes from mainstream “trolling”, a style of fishing in which one trails bait through a likely spot hoping for a bite. The well-constructed troll is a post that induces lots of newbies and flamers to make themselves look even more clueless than they already do, while subtly conveying to the more savvy and experienced that it is in fact a deliberate troll.

  14. Sanisha says:

so now feel retarded now for going and making a big mess up there…but on the other hand, this proves what we all already suspected: it takes OS more time and effort to perfect his trollism (and now actually defining for us above what in fact a troll is and does )

    > than it does to react to his trollistic tendancies,
but it works , I could not help myself .

  15. Original Sin says:

Joking yes, but I would be hard pressed to hire a woman if a man was equally qualified.
