Some fifty Bahá’í youth were arrested in the Iranian city of Shiraz this past Friday, May 19. At the time of their arrest, they were teaching classes to underprivileged children as part of an officially approved UNICEF programme. Though a judge told the families of those arrested that they would be soon freed, no charges have yet to be made. Click HERE for more.

The increase in human rights violations - of Bahá’ís and others - is of major concern to all right-thinking people, and at least equals the nuclear weapons issue in importance; it is also much more immediate, because while Iran will not be able to build a bomb for several years, it can persecute its religious minorities right now. It can, and it is is.

Bahá’ís are, as ever, urged to act only under the guidance of their national administrations.

  1. Original Sin says:

It will get *a lot* worse than this before it gets better.

  2. Saleem says:

Of course it will; and not just for Bahá’ís. If this column was being rigorous, we’d be mentioning much more than just this, and perhaps we should. Every time it gets worse, we should be pointing it out.
